UTM GLOSSARY

UTM glossary: tracking terms explained in plain English

This UTM glossary gives marketers, content teams and website owners a shared language for campaign tracking. Find clear definitions, practical context and links to deeper guides—without getting lost in analytics jargon.

29 terms

A broad index from attribution to visitor journey.

5 core fields

Source, medium, campaign, content and term.

2 languages

The same concepts in English and Swedish.

1 shared vocabulary

Fewer misunderstandings across teams and tools.

WHY WORDS MATTER

Better campaign decisions start with shared definitions

UTM tracking becomes difficult when the same word means different things to different people. A shared glossary makes campaign planning, link creation and reporting easier to discuss—and much easier to repeat.

ALIGN

Launch with less friction

Give campaign owners one place to check what each field means before a link is created.

COMPARE

Report with consistent language

Separate source, medium, campaign and content correctly so comparisons stay meaningful.

A–C

Attribution, campaigns and conversions

A

Attribution

The process of assigning credit for a visit, lead or conversion to the marketing touchpoints that influenced it. UTM parameters provide campaign context, while an attribution model decides how credit is distributed across the visitor journey.

C

Campaign

A coordinated marketing initiative with a defined audience, message, period or goal. In a UTM link, the campaign is normally identified by utm_campaign so related traffic can be grouped in reporting.

C

Campaign ID (utm_id)

An optional identifier used to connect a tagged URL to a campaign record in another platform. utm_id can be useful when names change or several systems need one stable campaign key.

C

Click

An interaction where a person follows a link, ad, email button or QR destination. A click is not automatically a conversion; it is the transition that brings the visitor to the tagged destination.

C

Conversion

A meaningful action that supports a business goal, such as a purchase, registration, booking or qualified enquiry. UTM data helps explain which campaign context preceded the conversion.

C

CTA (call to action)

The prompt that asks a person to take the next step, for example “Book a demo” or “Download the guide.” Use utm_content when you need to compare different CTA variants or placements.

D–M

Destinations, landing pages and campaign structure

D

Destination URL

The untagged web address visitors should reach. It is the foundation of every UTM link. Preserve required query parameters and anchors before adding campaign parameters.

F

First-party data

Information collected directly through your own website, product or customer relationship. UTM parameters can add acquisition context to first-party sessions and events without identifying the individual visitor.

L

Landing page

The first page a visitor reaches after clicking a campaign link. A good landing page matches the promise, audience and intent of the campaign that sent the visitor.

M

Medium (utm_medium)

The marketing channel or traffic type, such as cpc, email, paid_social, affiliate or qr. Medium should describe how the visitor arrived, not which platform sent them.

N

Naming convention

A documented set of rules for spelling and structuring UTM values. It may define lowercase use, separators, approved source names and who owns campaign naming decisions.

N–S

Parameters, sessions and traffic sources

O

Offline tracking

Connecting physical marketing activity to digital visits and outcomes. A QR code or short URL can carry UTM parameters that identify a poster, event, package, brochure or other offline placement.

P

Parameter

A name-and-value pair added after a question mark in a URL. In utm_source=linkedin, utm_source is the parameter name and linkedin is its value.

Q

QR code tracking

Using a QR destination with UTM parameters so scans can be grouped by campaign, placement or creative. Give different physical placements different values when you need to compare them.

R

Referrer

The page or domain reported as sending a visitor. Referrer data can be missing or vague, which is why deliberate UTM tagging is valuable for links you control.

S

Session

A group of interactions made by a visitor during a period of activity. Analytics tools use their own session rules, so campaign reporting should distinguish session counts from people, clicks and conversions.

S

Source (utm_source)

The platform, publisher, partner or origin that sent the visitor, such as google, linkedin, newsletter or a partner name. Source answers “where did this traffic come from?”

T–V

Tagged URLs, UTM fields and the visitor journey

T

Tagged URL

A destination URL that includes campaign parameters. A tagged URL and a UTM link usually mean the same thing when the added parameters use the UTM standard.

T

Term (utm_term)

An optional field for a paid-search keyword, audience segment or another targeting distinction. Use it only when the extra detail supports a reporting question.

T

Traffic source

The broader origin or acquisition context for a visit. In everyday reporting the phrase may refer to source, medium or their combination, so dashboards should define exactly what the dimension contains.

U

URL encoding

The safe representation of spaces and special characters inside a URL. A link builder should encode values correctly so characters do not break the address or change how parameters are interpreted.

U

UTM

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. Today the term describes a widely used set of URL parameters that carries campaign information into analytics and reporting tools.

U

UTM campaign (utm_campaign)

The field that names the promotion, launch, event or initiative you want to report on. Use a stable, descriptive value rather than a vague label such as test.

U

UTM content (utm_content)

An optional field that distinguishes creatives, messages, placements or CTAs within the same campaign. Examples include video_a, hero_button or sidebar_banner.

U

UTM parameter

One field in the UTM model. The five commonly used parameters are source, medium, campaign, content and term; the first three normally provide the essential reporting structure.

U

UTM strategy

The shared plan for how an organization names, creates, governs and reviews campaign links. It combines definitions with ownership, workflow and reporting needs.

V

Visitor journey

The sequence of pages and actions that follows a campaign visit. Combining UTM context with the visitor journey helps teams evaluate more than the first click or landing-page view.
