WHY THE DETAILS MATTER

Five clear fields save months of reporting frustration

A UTM link is easy to create. A useful UTM link gives every detail one clear home. When the team follows the same pattern, dashboards stay understandable and campaign comparisons stop becoming a cleanup project.
01

Compare without cleanup

Use the same source and medium logic so every team and channel can be compared with confidence.
02

Keep the story behind every campaign

Connect every click to the initiative, launch or promotion that gave it meaning.
03

Learn what creative really resonates

Use content and term values to see which messages, placements and audiences encourage action.
THE COMPLETE MODEL

Give every UTM parameter one clear responsibility

SOURCE

utm_source

Identifies the platform, publisher or partner that sent the visitor. Examples: google, linkedin, newsletter or partner_name.

MEDIUM

utm_medium

Describes the marketing channel or traffic type. Examples: cpc, paid_social, email, affiliate or qr.

CAMPAIGN

utm_campaign

Names the initiative you want to report on. Use a stable value such as spring_launch_2026 rather than a vague label like promo.

CONTENT

utm_content

Distinguishes creative variants, placements or calls to action. Examples: video_a, hero_button or sidebar_banner.

TERM

utm_term

Stores paid-search keywords, audience segments or another targeting detail when that distinction supports a real reporting question.

URL

Destination URL

The untagged landing page is the foundation. Keep the path and required query parameters intact before appending the UTM parameter set.

Rules that keep the parameter set useful

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Build a UTM parameter workflow people can follow every time

01

Define the reporting question

Start with the decision the campaign report should support. That determines which parameters are required and which details would only add noise.

02

Select approved values

Choose source, medium and campaign values from a shared naming convention instead of inventing new labels during launch.

03

Add useful distinctions

Use content and term only when the team will actually compare creative, placement, keyword or audience performance.

04

Validate and store the link

Check the destination, spelling and parameter order, then save the final link where campaign owners can find and reuse it.
